About Columbus Cheese

Welcome! My name is John Osborn and I am the operator of ColumbusCheese.com. This website was started so that I could share the fun of cheese-making with others and to serve as a place for other cheese makers to get some of the supplies they need.  You could think of this as your neighborhood brewing supply shop only for cheese, and online.

I have been making my own cheese at home for the past three years. It all started when my father and I were wondering “how is cheese made, can we make it?” We were expecting that it would be hard and technically unfeasible to make halfway edible cheese, but we looked up how to do it and gave it a try. Much to our surprise the resulting cheese was not gag-inducing, it was actually pretty decent! Next we got a cheese making kit and try our hands at an aged soft cheese. Our first aged cheese was a camembert that aged for six weeks and ended up tasting better than the stuff you buy at a grocery store. Success! We then experimented with other types of cheese and different methods of making them, some experiments worked but others just left a stinking mass of gunk. But over time I figured out how to make more cheese than mess, and now I can make a cheese that I am proud to share with friends and family.
